Suppression- This component can slow or even eliminate monsters regeneration over time, making it good for defense in depth strategies using many gems (particularly traps), or situations where you're not sure your killgem can eliminate monsters on the first pass. Additionally, poison does not impact enemy structures, but can bypass armor, making it effective against enemies such as Shadows, Giants, or other monsters with armor buffs, as well as ignoring the damage cap of Spires. Particularly when when combined with chain hit, poison traps are great at mopping up swarmlings and to a lesser extent, reavers. On the other hand, poison is a uniquely good damage source in traps since it benefits from the special boost but is unaffected by the base damage reduction. This can be a double edged sword since the poison damage only scales with a single variable (the strength of the poison component), it tends to lose effectiveness as a killgem at higher levels.
Poison- Unlike other damage boosting specials, poison increases the damage of its gems by a flat amount. Like bound components, chain hit can be useful in practically any gem, provided enemies are packed closely enough. Keep in mind that you can always add these components to gems after reaching a desired hit or mana pool level.Ĭhain Hit- This component can effectively multiply the damage and other specials of a gem by applying them to several targets with one shot. Their benefits can start off small, but their special scales exponentially better than others, not only adding a multiplier to the damage and specials of the gem but increasing that multiplier based on the the hit and mana pool levels respectively. This component is invaluable in "killgems" intended to be your main source of DPS, particularly at higher levels where base damage matters less and less compared to gem specials.īloodbound/Poolbound- Able to multiply raw damage output and other specials, both bound components are useful in all kinds of gems. This can also lead to synergies with bloodbound gems.Ĭritical Hit- With a chance to deal significantly more damage to enemies, these gems are specialized in pure, simple damage output.
Maximize the number of hits they get, and consider placing them in traps with either a beam or barrage enhancement. The amount of mana per hit is very small, so you need to make the most of it. Mana Leech- This one is fairly self-explanatory every hit from these gems generates a little bit of mana.

Overly generalized gems will typically perform worse at all of their roles than an assortment of specialized gems would, and gems with fewer components have gain bonuses- True colors adds bonuses for every gem up to four components, and everything up to three components gets innate bonuses. Each has its own niche, and unless you're looking to get specific achievements it's inadvisable to combine too many components into a single gem.
